Save the political prisoners of Tajikistan

The international community should pressure the Tajik authorities to release all political prisoners, all other convicts over the age of 50 years old, and those with underlying health conditions due to their deteriorating health, the well-known terrible conditions in Tajikistan’s prisons and the worldwide threat of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Hundreds of cases of Covid-19 exist today in our prisons and the existence of such a cluster is a danger to all of Tajikistan.
Human decency, moral principles, and common sense dictate that at-risk prisoners be immediately released or at a minimum be transferred into the custody of their families where their health can be better protected while this crisis sweeps across Tajikistan.
We have seen the release of prisoners in many jurisdictions around the world from Iran to Europe and to the United States. In addition, in Tajikistan, there is no access to the International Committee of the Red Cross despite the fact that several UN bodies have stated torture is systematic in prisons. Therefore, I urge all governments, embassies in Tajikistan, and international organizations to speak out on behalf of the many at risk prisoners, including political prisoners in Tajikistan, and call for their immediate release in accordance with Tajikistan’s international obligations.
These include that “All people are equal before the law and have the right, without any distinction, to equal protection of the law. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. And No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”
